Do you wonder what your language proficiency level is? Find out more in the descriptions below.
A1 – Beginner
I can say hello or say basic facts about myself. I can understand simple facts in conversation with foreigners. I am not yet able to write or understand long essays or articles as I don’t even have a good command of vocabulary or system of grammar rules.
A2 – Post-beginner / False beginner
When I am to use the language, I can speak or write about simple everyday situations. I can express myself orally or in writing and I can have an elementary conversation about topics like, for example, food, drinks, work, travelling or entertainment. My command of grammar and elementary vocabulary allow me to understand simpler texts about these topics.
B1 – Pre-intermediate
In a simple form I can make myself understood in more complex situations and I can use the foreign language adequately both in writing and orally. In terms of grammar, I already have a good command of elementary system of tenses, such as past simple or future simple. I already have a varied vocabulary, but I can’t use it actively in a fluent speech. I am already able to read easy books, for example fairy tales or short stories.
B2 – Intermediate
Using more developed sets of prepositions, I can speak fluently in consistent segments and read even more difficult texts about abstract topics, for example feelings, moods or emotions. I also understand more difficult topics when listening to texts or people speaking without the need to hear it repeated. My written expression already shows first signs of elementary understanding of different styles. I have a very solid command of grammar rules and vocabulary and I can use both fluently.
C1 – Advanced
My perfect understanding of grammar and vocabulary allow me both to express myself to such an extent as to be able to focus on more complex parts of the language, especially when it comes to distinguishing and using formal and informal language or abstract collocations, for example in Czech „jde to jako po másle“, English “it’s all plain sailing”, Deutsch “es läuft wie geschmiert”, Français “ça marche comme sur des roulettes”. I can already express myself orally or in writing about both every day and academic or professional topics in correct formal language.
C2 – Expert (Near-native)
My expression in the foreign language is more or less as developed as in a native speaker. I can easily describe even the most difficult situations. In terms of tenses, I can use several tenses at the same time and my active vocabulary is likely to count around 10 to 15 thousand units. My speech is literally packed with a multitude of digressions, complex grammar or lexical constructions and style nuances. I can easily read and understand very complex pieces of literature (Charles Dickens “Oliver Twist”, Heinrich Heine “Deutschland: Ein Wintermärchen” , Stendhal “Le Rouge et le Noir”, Karel Čapek “Krakatit” etc.)
